The ideal height

I’m living in a world of hobbits.  Not literally because then we’d be in Middle-Earth.  However, there appears to be many short men on dating sites.  I’m not heightist.  There is nothing wrong with a bit shorter or even a lot shorter than the average height.  Indeed, many ladies adore the shorter male.  I, however, am not one of these ladies.  I desire a tall man.  To quote Biffy Clyro, ‘the ideal height’, is about 6 foot 2.  There are exceptions of course – Simon Neil of aforementioned Biffy Clyro is not a tall man but he is a sexy men.  Height, in the case of Sir Simon, is a moot point.  I could get lost in his tattoos.  I could probably spend a day just looking at his ‘In Utero’ inking. Anyhoo, notable, Scottish rockers notwithstanding, the ideal height is tall.  I want to stand on my tip toes to kiss someone.  This is a requirement.  There are others. Just in case fate is listening and has stopped playing practical jokes. Said requirements:

  • Longish hair
  • 6 foot 2ish
  • Blue eyes - the piercing, fall into variety
  • Indieish, hippyish sense of style - difficult to explain but I know it when I see it because erm I’ve seen it
  • Kind to the planet
  • Kind to the people (especially children)
  • Ethical - if they buy a kitkat they need to at least appreciate that kitkats are baaaaad
  • Intelligent
  • Wordy
  • Wise - or working towards wise, at least 3 or 4 times a week
  • Tardy
  • Poetic
  • Able to play the guitar - or the triangle in a rock star manner
  • Varied taste in music
  • Passionate about music
  • Empath - or at least empathetic
  • Funny - Bill Bailey level
  • Extrovert introvert - this is a thing, I know because I have it
  • Beard - not a ZZ Top style beard
  • Short sighted - yes, I don’t want someone to be perfect
  • Profoundly sexy
  • Has a job / career type thingy
  • Responds to messages within a consistent 2 hour turnaround - unless rare, unforeseen circumstances prevents it, such as alien invasion
  • Open and honest –the open thing can be work in progress, the honest thing is absolute apart from answers to questions like ‘does my bum look big in this'
  • Prepared to escort to me and my loved ones to The Winchester during the zombie apocalypse
  • The ability to fight demons, should the need present itself
  • The ability to juggle or some other completely useless talent
  • Hedonism - moderate and occasional, balanced by picnics and healthy strolls by the river
  • Swears - but never in front of my parents, daughter, niece, nephew etc
  • Sweet - as in would you like a foot rub, Ill carry that for you because I'm helpful not because you're weak, can I get you a drink, you look really beautiful in that onesie etc etc
That’s all I require in a man.  I’m so easy to please.  Cant work out why I’m still single.

Yours

Dusty Geminis

~

Was reflected, before I knew
Part of me - part of you
Beautiful life, uncompleted
From before, then re-seeded

Slow waiting, to awaken
Before this birth, oft aching
Two mirrored, yet opposites
All lost until, we're offered it

Heart waiting for star-prophet
Soul's memory, forgotten
Still here, but fallen, gone
Now shadows cover my sun

With lost compass and broken clock
Til these dusty Geminis interlock

Your transient

~
Give me lines on glass
The dawn tides
And walking past

Bring me feathery flashes
The midnight moments
And backward glances

Offer me time fractured
The broken pieces
And filtered answers.

I'll take your transient
Over some eternity
You, here, resplendent.

On this day,
Forever and on.
A moment was all.
We were fleetingly one.

Poetic

Part of my bucket list was to read more poetry. Not to begin. It began long ago. I wanted to absorb more poets. This is happening.  Im currently reading John Donne, Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson and often returning to Florence Ripley Mastin. I hope my own poetic thoughts are improving through this process.

The Good-Morrow

I recently happened upon a collection of poetry books. An exciting charity shop find. This poem is the first in the book from John Donne's collection. The Good-Morrow.

Decision

Past: I have tended to put a lot of effort into romantic entanglements. The hanging off their every word. The adoring looks - as in, me adoring them.  I have been super interested in their interests, whereas they have barely noticed mine. Man: Come watch me play pool. Hazel: Absolutely, I'll do that for you. Even though watching the carpet would be more thrilling.

I've attended martial arts matches and simultaneously had to study for uni on a sweaty floor. I've slept in caving huts on stained mattresses. Darts matches, climbing walls, old man pubs, cricket, football....the list goes on and on. I've waited for messages, phone calls, their delayed appearance at an event. In short, I have behaved like a mug every single time I was filled with the curse that is romantic love. This ridiculous behaviour ends today.

I cannot think of one romantic partner who has reciprocated the level of effort I have made for them. Not one. Not yet.

Present: I choose the men who gaze adoringly at me. Those who try. Damn hard. Anything less than 100℅ effort will be politely ignored. I am worth so much more than half-hearted, vague gestures.

Arwen gave Aragorn the Evenstar (Elessar). She gave up her immortality for the man she loved. I choose this level of effort. Well something roughly comparable within the realms of reality.

I am not Arwen. I'm Aragorn (albeit without the beard and the orcs).
