Grimes Genesis

I've recently been listening to Grimes. Discovered totally by chance on You Tube. Upshot is that I like it. In fact, I like much.

The track, Genesis, interests me. For about five watches and listens - I thought what on earth is she saying. I now think that I've worked it out. Although the lyrics don't tell an obvious story. I suspect that the song and video are making comment on female stereotypes and their (imagined, sociological and patriarchal) link to sex. There is a fair amount of sexual metaphors and phallic symbol bouncing around the video - a large albino snake, swords, women bouncing up and down in a hip hop style, large bulbous weapons being swung around heads, scantily clad ladies, virginal outfits and so on. It's all in there. Snapshots of the lyrics suggest that Grimes is saying 'I am what you want' (or rather I, as this array of imagined versions of me, is what you want).

Of course, I could be talking nonsensical twoddle. The song could be about cats. Only Grimes knows for sure.

One of the women in the video looks like Katy Price aka Jordan but on a bigger make-up than usual, gothed up day. This fact need not put you off.

Grimes' sound is mostly experimental - it points to ambient house and folk. It feels odd. Odd in a beautiful way. It is also rather spiritual. It feels like there a lots of fairies racing about with dirty flowers in their hands and hair.

Anyway, Grimes in general, and Genesis, in particular, is certainly worth an open-minded listen.

Loved before: song books and music instruction

We, that is, my husband and I, have lots of song and music instruction books for sale. These are items we already own but no longer have space for. The music instruction books include harmonica, drums, saxophone, guitar, keyboard and clarinet. The song books include The Cranberries, The Beatles, The Carpenters and Paul Weller.

Now Xmas is fast approaching. I panicked when I realised just how close the big day actually is. Fortunately, my husband and I have decided not buy each other presents this year. Baa humbug and boo hoo but if you plan to buy your other half a gift and they like music - perhaps music instruction or a song book could be a handy gift. I find that men are soooo hard to buy for so a few strategic musical purchases could save you lots of time and trouble. That said, there are many ladies that would get lots of enjoyment from The Songs of the Carpenters or learning to play slap bass.

We also have music videos, CD's, sound equipment, blank demo CD cases and other musical goodies. Some of the items we are selling have absolutely nothing to do with music such as vintage stockings, baby clothes, a gorgeous wedding dress - the list goes on and on. All items are preloved. All are interesting and definitely worth a peruse.

Ethical baby products

Beaming Baby is a rather ethical UK company that stocks baby related products from nappies and nappy rash cream to pregnancy products and organic toothpaste. We use Beaming Baby nappies and they are the most ethical disposable available in the UK. Pretty good for babies' bottoms too. They also stock lovely organic Weleda products. I like Beaming Baby. Be an ethical consumer

Eco shopping is pretty easy these days. The Internet is packed full of websites that are or claim to be ethical. You buy products that are ethically made, products made from recycled materials, you can buy second-hand and vintage, you can buy products from online charity shops and purchase ethically sourced, charity donatable flowers - the list goes on and on. So how does the ethically minded consumer, consume and remain on the right side of ethical? Moreover, how does the ethical consumer negotiate the array of options when time is short and the money pile is even shorter? It isn't easy. Thus I'm sharing a little consumer map which should help the budding buyer find their way through the ethical shopping mind-field and emerge at the check-out relatively unscathed.

Buy from trusted spaces
This applies for any purchase. Don't buy from a website that is unfamiliar, has no secure framework ie https, key encryption and / or Paypal. You could end up giving your money away.

Check the websites About Section
What products does it sell, who are the people behind the site and what are their ethics. Just because the website says it's ethical, doesn't mean it is.

Buy Second-hand
Buying second-hand items is obviously ethical. Firstly, it means new manufacturing hasn't occurred - this is a good thing. Secondly, it uses something that already exists, protecting it from being land-filled. Second-hand also has human rights linked benefits - if something isn't newly manufactured, it hasn't been made in a sweat shop just because you want to buy it. Admittedly, the item in question could have previously been produced under unethical circumstances - e.g. a second-hand skirt bought via a charity shop that was originally made for Primark has been made unethically, possibly by children in poor and unsafe working conditions but because the item is second-hand, you, the consumer has not contributed to the unethical production chain. I hope that makes sense, it is rather difficult to grasp and definitely difficult to describe.

Buy items made from up-cycled, recycled, re-claimed materials
There are lots of products now that are made from recycled materials. This is generally a very good thing but a note of caution, any new product, contributes to C02 production, is possibly linked to poor human rights and may have a direct, negative impact upon a countries' physical environment. However, there is a stronger possibility that a company who creates a product from recycled, up-cycled or re-claimed materials will have a viable ethical framework in place. Check the websites About section. Check where the product has been made. For example, products made in China are not ethical. Even up-cycled and recycled products. China has a history of appalling human rights, continues to persecute and control Tibet and generates a huge amount of pollution. Although there are reports that China are making some headway with pollution.

Don't be a slave to consumption
Question purchasing decisions. Do I need this product? Why do I want to buy it? Is the product durable? Is it fit for purpose? Can I fix it if it breaks? Can I afford to buy it? It seems that people buy items in the Western world that they do not need, want long-term and, most importantly, that they cannot afford. People are sucked into the idea that they can and indeed deserve to buy now, pay later. The effort = reward partnership is largely obsolete in modern, Western society. By that I mean, as a general pattern, a consumer can purchase a range of products - beyond their current financial means. Thus the reward comes before the effort. The process of saving money then buying something to reward that effort seems all too rare. This is shame. It's actually much more exciting when effort = reward. The purchased items matters more when effort has been expended to get it. Moreover, life can and indeed should be rather wonderful without a new pair of shoes or an expensive holiday abroad. It can be wonderfully rewarding just to stop and smell the flowers. To enjoy life. To notice life. Much pleasure can be gained from the smallest things, without spending a penny. That said, the Western world is epitomised by capitalism and it is difficult to see an end consumerism. Treats often seems to have a price tag attached. But it does make sense to take your time and think before you buy.

Buy from friends and family
Help your loved ones out by buying products and services from them. If you know someone that has their own business - support it. They will thank you for it and respond in kind.

Buy local
There is little point buying a recycled chair that has traveled half way around the world to get your dining room. That said, it is also good to support Fair Trade and community projects - as doing so helps communities pull themselves out of poverty. But the point it is, to question your decision. Think before your buy.

Most of all consider the Butterfly Effect - the decision you make now will have consequences rippling across the globe. This sounds like an exaggeration but it isn't. This applies to all things, not just shopping. For example, if I stop sharing the work of Oxfam and cease encouraging friends on Facebook to buy Xmas presents from Oxfam, this will mean that less people have the power to fight against poverty. The Butterfly Effect matters and we, the people, have the power to changes things in positive ways.

A J Jenkins - who is he?

Who is A J Jenkins? This question is regarding the singer of educational children's songs. There is very little on the Internet about the man himself. We play his songs on a daily basis. My children love them. I find myself singing Funny Fiona or the B Song rather than tunes of a more grown up variety. His melodies are magical. His lyrics educate. Yet when I search for information, there is quite a lot on the songs, on Kids 123 but precious little on the song maker. Does anyone out there, in the big world wide web have any information? The man in the article linked above, lives entirely without money. Amazing. Probably tricky to do if you have children but even then, I imagine you could take steps towards it. The Western world has become very materialistic. As this article states, we are now totally removed from and oblivious to the process of our consumerism. We consume blindly, without consideration to what hides within. What has truly gone into the product we are holding? Who has died for it? Who has suffered for it? How much planetary damage has been caused through making the product. This man's life is not mediated by the shopping trolley. He is living directly. He says he is happy. It sounds good to me. xx

Something I created in long ago times. I think I was about 17. If I was making a statement, it was probably full of angst and confusion. More than likely though, Id been watching too many trippy videos and staring at too many magic eye prints.

Music art: Gaga

Music is art and art is music. I suppose all creative expression might be art. I am going somewhere with this. Promise. I was thinking today about Lady Gaga and other popular music 'artists' like her. Assuming that we can say that anyone is like Gaga. Madonna maybe. Anyway, most popular music artists have a style, indeed they are styled. They employ people to style them or they style themselves with paid for guidance. But for some, it seems more than styled, for some the way they look in a public arena seems to be art. Self art, if you will. For example, if you Google Gaga (ha), almost every picture of her seems to make a statement of some kind. It isn't always clear what that statement is but visually speaking, she is saying something.

For example, check out the image below. Gaga is holding her, ahem, boobs and a huge blue ball sits between her legs. I have no clue what statement is being made but I guess at something sexual / metrosexual.

The image below is rather scary. Maybe it was her Halloween guise. Spooky.

The next image is erm interesting. Suggesting a machine-human symbiosis perhaps? Or maybe just a naked lady sitting on a uncomfortable chair for the purposes of selling records.

In the final image below, we see Gaga wearing strange pyramid sculpture shoulder pads. Homage to Madonna's pointy boobs perhaps? There are those that would suggest that the pyramids point (tee hee) to Illuminati origins. Who knows. Either way, it's an interesting choice of outfit.

Yes Gaga is definitely more than styled. She is art. Moreover she is odd art. I find myself wondering what her fans buy into. I feel it's more than the music. They buy into the whole package. The visual, the carefully packaged 'attitude', the controversy and so on. If Gaga just presented music alone, it would probably be Ga-who not Gaga. No one would have a clue who she was without the self-art stuff. As things stand, I think even my parents have heard of Lady Gaga. Im not sure that they could whistle one of her tunes though.

The Gaga package and other pop packages, makes me wonder if it is impossible to have the music without image. Perhaps in order to achieve super music orientated fame, you must become a sort of conceptual art or at least be superstyled with attitude.............
